1. Educational Purpose

ProvenanceAI is an educational tool designed to help students track their collaboration with Generative AI tools. All data collection is strictly for pedagogical assessment and academic integrity verification.

2. FERPA Compliance

This application operates within university LMS environments and is subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Student records (prompts, reflections, grades) are protected and accessible only to the student and authorized instructors.

3. Data Collection

We collect:

  • User account information (Email, Name) provided by the institution.
  • Interaction data with AI models (Prompts, Outputs) captured via the Browser Extension.
  • Reflections and manual entries submitted within the platform.
  • Telemetry data for system stability and academic research (anonymized where possible).

4. No Sale of Data

Student data is never sold to third parties or used for advertising purposes.

5. Data Retention

Student data is retained for the duration of the academic term plus one year for grade appeals. After this period, data may be anonymized for research purposes or deleted upon request.

You agree to use this tool to honestly represent your work process. Tampering with the provenance chain, fabricating nodes, or disabling the extension to hide AI usage may constitute a violation of your institution's Honor Code.

3. Acceptable Use

Do not use the platform to store or generate illegal, harassing, or harmful content. We reserve the right to suspend accounts violating these standards.

4. Intellectual Property

You retain ownership of all content you create within the platform. By submitting work, you grant your institution a license to review and assess your submissions.

5. Disclaimer

This is foundational software provided "as is". While we strive for data durability, please keep backups of your important coursework.

Prohibited Conduct

  • Fabricating or falsifying provenance nodes
  • Sharing account credentials with others
  • Submitting work that misrepresents the level of AI assistance used
  • Attempting to disable or circumvent the browser extension during assignments
  • Using the platform to harass, intimidate, or discriminate against others

Consequences

Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action as determined by your institution, which may include academic penalties, suspension from the platform, or referral to academic integrity boards.

Reporting

If you witness conduct that violates this code, please report it to your course instructor or institution's academic integrity office.
